Training for Micro-Analytical Platform Technology (MAPTech)

Training for Micro-Analytical Platform Technology (MAPTech) is an integrated training programme which will provide talented early stage researchers with the opportunity to gain specialist experience blending scientific research, technology development, commercialisation and economic development, focusing specifically on emerging micro-analytical systems, biosensors and nanotechnologies.  Cenamps has worked closely with European partners to successfully establish and secure the Marie Curie project which commenced on 1st September 2006.

MAPTech brings together host institutions, with established research laboratories in this key area of technological development, facilitating the flow of researchers, expertise and technology between them using a multi-host training site that is targeted at enhancing both scientific and commercial skills.  Training and mentoring incorporating a number of exchange periods available throughout the PhD training will support PhD students enrolled on programmes at the host institutions of Cenamps, University of Teesside, Parc Cientific de Barcelona, Fraunhofer and VTT Technical Research Centre.

The multi-disciplinary nature of the field of micro-analytical systems, biosensor and nanotechnologies demand inter-faculty activities across the host consortium, to enable early stage researchers to receive training from dedicated experts in fields such as engineering, computing, physics, biology and chemistry.  A key element of MAPTech is that researchers will be expected to spend a significant period of training at Institutions other than their primary host, thus strengthening cross-border collaborations.

MAPTech is designed to focus on aspects outside the normal remit of academic scientific research; these are specifically included within this programme to provide researchers with a broader expose to commercial and economic aspects of their work including:

  • Project management
  • New product development
  • Innovation and enterprise
  • Intellectual property
  • Technology and ethics
  • Economic development
  • Business start-up

This project is supported by funding under the Sixth Research Framework Programme of the European Union.
