Cenamps and Smith & Nephew are two of the leading players responsible for the formation and running of the Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA). The Association will provide a representative voice for UK industries engaged in developing, applying and commercialising nano-scale technologies. By working with industry regulators, the NIA aims to ensure the full societal, commercial and economic benefits offered by emerging nanotechnologies are realised by the UK.

Nanotechnology is a cluster of emerging small-scale technologies for exploring, understanding and mastering the properties of matter at the nano-scale. It offers industry an array of technologies for solving many of societies needs and challenges by means of smaller, lighter, flexible, faster and better performing products and processes.

Nanotechnology has the potential to bring benefits to everyday life through the innovation of smart objects and devices and environments that

better fit into our surroundings and lives. Examples being developed include sports garments with embedded biosensors, paints that change colour on demand, solar cells that help power our homes and even implants that restore lost sight.

The technology has the potential to make essential contributions to solving global and environmental challenges through the innovation of new products and processes that better conserve the planet’s scarce resources and protect our natural environment.

The NIA will engage in open dialogue with, raise awareness of and provide access to informational resources on nanotechnology to stakeholders in government, the media and non-government organisations (NGO) as well as interested members of the public.

It will focus on key topics including the assessment of risks and uncertainties, highlighting societal and economic benefits, the identification of unique areas of potential competitive advantage for the UK, the classification

of the various strands and disciplines of nanotechnologies and demystifying the subject of nanotechnology.

Members of the Association consist of leading multinationals, medium enterprises, start-ups and investment firms operating in the UK. These include Oxonica, L’Oreal, QinetiQ, Thomas Swan, Unilever, 3i and Celltech. Cenamps will be the secretariat for the Association, actively promoting and growing NIA.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is supporting the formation of the Association, through Cenamps’ roles. There are significant opportunities for UK plc to become a major player in the future development and commercialisation of nanotechnologies, that will enable the strengthening of the UK’s manufacturing base and economy.

The NIA will actively support the UK industries in achieving this important goal.
