Our strategy

Since our formation in 2003, Cenamps has been formulating and evolving its strategy. Forming a vital component of One NorthEast’s Strategy for Success, it focuses on generating greater economic prosperity and enhancing the region’s R&D capacity by stimulating, developing and commercialising emerging technologies with strong consumer and societal drivers.

In deriving the strategy, we explored a number of key interconnected threads, such as geographical shifts in global supply chains, increased value of information, the convergence of biotechnology, nanotechnology and ICT, demographic changes in society, the need for preventative approaches in medicine, increasing public awareness and questioning of new technologies - the increasing sophistication of today’s consumers.

The key components to our strategy are:

  • Strategic Technology footprint to meet business, consumer and societal needs for making everyday life simpler. Also to improve health, focusing on the developments of emerging technologies for innovating new products, processes and services. Learn more about our technology footprint
  • Strengthening the region’s economy by commercialising technologies and developing applications in key market sectors. This increases connectivity to global markets and supports the three areas identified by One NorthEast (as part of the Strategy for Success) as key pillars for the regions: life sciences, energy and process industries
  • Connecting science to business by working closely with entrepreneurs and industry leaders, academia and government on collaborative R&D engagements and services, selectively supporting small business, medium size firms and large corporations to overcome their specific innovation challenges and needs
  • Developing open access facilities to further strengthen the region’s R&D capacity and innovation capabilities. The Plastic Electronics Technology Centre (PETeC) forms a key component of our strategy, along with the Atomic Layer Deposition programme – both with the aim of establishing new R&D facilities and capabilities in the region
  • Taking into consideration the ethical context of the emerging technologies within our technology footprint, and the relationship between technology and society in stimulating sustainable innovation and development. We explore both the opportunities and uncertainties that new technologies bring
